White Doves in a Chinese Restaurant
Sitting in the bar of a Chinese restaurant
Balls in high spirits, belting, "I'm forever
Blowing bubbles, pretty bubbles in the air,
They fly so high, nearly reach the sky,
Then like my dreams they fade and die."
That's when I spotted the two of them
(The city from a distance at night)
Teenagers dropped off for gentle courtship
(The city is ablaze for me, and I stare).
Lo mein, and oh, man
His eyes how wide and filled with longing
She fixed a hair that wasn't out of place
They sighed with heartbreaking seriousness
The utter casualness of it!
(Innocence, how strange)
All fidgets and smiles and conventional wisdom
They're flamingos! They're a poem!
I saw visions of ghostly neon lights just then,
A Ferris wheel beneath the dharma red of dusk
Silhouetting a backdrop of sawdust and pearls
Swimming in my scorpion bowl, as red...
As red as love and Spanish mysteries
And I smiled because they had no idea
They were the heroes of this unbearably sweet night.
